A project dedicated to EU immigrants and their real story behind the myths and the prejudices.
Swedish Democrats Parti (Sverige Demokraterna) known to be controversial in their statements with anti-immigrant politics and with nazi roots. The parti launched in May 2014 an advertising campaign targeted against the EU immigrated baggers in Sweden to convince the people that the bagging is criminalized and need to be stopped in the streets. The parti received huge criticism for their campaign as it was incorrect and false and meant to be more of a propaganda.
Having worked with a few stories covering the situation of the EU immigrants in Stockholm, I immediately felt that I had to do something to make their voices heard and make sure to bring their real stories infront of the public.
I started immediately working on the project where I went out on the streets to meet baggers and asked for an intervju and a photograph. Their stories, not to the surprise, revealed that these people come from very poor circumstances and with a oppressed background. This needed to come in the spotlight and break the myths and the prejudices surrounding the EU immigrants. The ambition is to raise awareness and understanding and hopefully even empathy for people who may not live under the same terms of conditions and circumstances as many others do.
The project is planed to continue to be exhibited in different cities around Sweden. For exhibition inquiries and further more information, please send an email to info@carloszaya.com.
